This website has been created by members of the Cumbria Industrial History Society with help from members of the Cumbria Amenity Trust Mining History Society.

CIHS was formed in 1985 by members of the Cumberland and Westmorland Antiquarian and Archaeological Society with a particular interest in industrial history. The regular programme includes winter evening meetings, guided field trips in summer often to sites normally closed to the public, an annual conference and a regular bulletin. Follow this link to see a list of its publications. In addition the Society is actively involved in the recording and conservation of important sites. Our most recent major project was to catalogue and digitise the vast (25,000) slide collection of the late Mike Davies-Shiel, president of the society and one of the leading industrial historians of the Lake Counties.

If you would like to join or receive further information about CIHS please write to The Membership Secretary, Glenrae, Brigsteer Road, Kendal, Cumbria, LA9 5DY, or print out and complete a membership application form. The Society’s rules can be seen here.

CAT was formed in 1979 by a group of friends, and is committed to the protection and stabilisation of industrial archaeological remains for future generations, particularly in Cumbria and the North Pennines. The Society has carried out a number of conservation and exploration projects, and published research by its members in a quarterly newsletter, leaflets and books.
