This is not the place for a comprehensive history of farming in Cumbria – that deserves a website of its own. For the time being the township histories which are being added to the new Victoria County History contain a lot of interesting and useful information which will eventually cover the county as a whole. There are many short articles about aspects of farming in their local area on the Cartmel Peninsula LHS’s website here.
What we do have here are a number of guides to different aspects of agriculture in Cumbria:
- Farming in Cumbria today
- The agricultural improvements of the 18th and 19th centuries
- The influence of major landowners
- The role of agricultural education
- The development of modern farm buildings
- The work of The Land Settlement Association in Cumbria
Other topics that have their own places on this website but are very relevant to the history of farming in Cumbria include lime-burning and tile-making.
